(31) crater lake circuit walk

60 Great Short Walks Tasmania Australia - National Parks and World Heritage SitesThe 5.7km Crater Lake Circuit Walk is set at a comparatively low altitude compared with many of the other tracks in the immediate Cradle Mountain area. This factor has the combined advantage of creating a relatively easy walk, (despite being classed as at Level 3) and being lower, it is also an alternative route to many of the higher walks in bad weather conditions.

The track has several long exposed ridge sections through sub-alpine vegetation. If traveling clockwise, the 5.7km circuit skirts the eastern side of Lake Lilla and Wombat Pool to the west, to run along the north eastern side of Crater Lake, before looping north and finally turning south and rejoining the linking track back to the start point.

Graded Level 3, the Crater Lake Circuit Walk is suitable for well-equipped walkers with good levels of bush walking proficiency and fitness. Sections of the track can be icy and slippery, particularly during the winter months. Heavy rain, snow and freezing temperatures can occur at any time. Good equipment is essential. Stout footwear, thermal leggings or shorts, a jersey, warm hat or beanie, waterproof trousers and a good quality outer shell jacket are recommended, along with food and drink and a map of the area.

Walkers should allow 2-hours to complete the 5.7km circuit. This time is calculated on an easy, steady walking pace. It does not take into account time spent relaxing, eating or of course breaks taken for photography.

Pets and firearms and bicycles are not permitted in the national park.

Park entry fees DO apply.

Facilities:
There are toilet facilities at Dove Lake and the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre with picnic tables at Ronny Creek.

Vehicle Access:
Follow Cradle Mountain Road to Dove Lake. The beginning of the circuit is reached by following the boat shed track and branching right to join the circuit track when the tracks split about 300-metres from the start point.
